Feb. 24-28

Another fantastic week completed for Grade 7.  We had some excellent collaboration, great projects under way, and a fun field trip.

In ELA, we continued working on our stories, did some editing practice, and are looking forward to collaborating with some grade 9 classes next week to get some feedback on our written work thus far. We also completed spelling list #12 this week.

In Social Studies, we continued our research work. Some of us are really working on our collaboration skills and finding effective group work strategies when we do not always agree.

For Math, this week we started a really big group project. All students were placed into pre-selected groups, and are working to become the owners of a brand new professional sports team.  We are incorporating some art skills, writing skills, and a whole plethora of various math skills along the way.

The students also were given an information sheet about the parent meeting for Camp Chief Hector. The students are asked to return the second page of this letter to Strickland before March 6th. If you have any questions about this, please feel free to email me.

Students should have their animal/plant report completed with comments and grades in PowerSchool. They’ve been working on understanding vocabulary and key concepts in topics#1-4. They have two more days left to finish a mini mind map of the bold words in the first 4 topics. Next week they will be having a vocabulary quiz/test.

February 18-21

Another fun week!
In ELA, we have continued to work on our short stories. Most students are plugging on, some have printed and are working on editing for details.
In Social, we have begun a research project around the Fur Trade. Please ask the students about their topics and about how to deal with peers they do not normally collaborate with.
For Math, we will be looking to move on from division next week.

Students should have now handed in their animal/plant adaptations research project. They have had extra time to complete this. If this assignment is still not done by Monday, then I will have them in with me for 20 minutes at lunch to get some extra help on this assignment. Check online for comments and marks for this. Students should have also completed their ‘create a creature’ assignment they received on Wednesday. Be sure to check PowerSchool on a regular basis for student effort, assignment completion, comments and marks.

Power Up Feb. 20th

We are continuing with the magazine project. We have started to meet in small groups to get organized and to get a consistent system in place. Students have duo-tangs where they track their progress (for the project) and themselves in general as a learner. This is a great opportunity to talk about the project, ask questions, understand themselves as a learner and share ideas. Some are fully engaged and have a clear picture and some are still finding their footing. This is a shift in the Power Up frameworks - students are always allotted some time to catch up in other classes and assignments and get support as needed.

Feb. 10-12

Another fun week completed in grade 7.

We continue to enjoy our daily circle time, learning from and with each other while making some awesome personal connections with our peers.

In ELA, we have continued our personal creative writing. Lots of the students are picking up on previous stories, collaborating together, or being entirely original. Next week we will look to finish our first rough copy and will go looking for some feedback.

In Social Studies, we have activated our prior knowledge about the fur trade and are looking to gain a deeper understanding of the very foundation of "Canada".

For Math this week, we have continued to progress with division. The students have been working through a series of pages, progressively becoming more challenging.

Please be mindful of the Disconnect Challenge taking place next week!!

Wednesday, February 12th was the due date to have finished typing up their animal/plant research report. They did it on Google docs, which is available at home for those of you who have Internet. Ask to see your child’s report. It is a one page, double spaced, size 12 font. The focus is on a plant or animal’s adaptations and should include a minimum of 3 online resources.

Feb. 3-7

Another fun week completed.

In ELA, we completed spelling list 11 and have embarked on a fun writing journey. The students have begun to craft their own short stories. Some great imaginations are being explored!!

In Social Studies, we reviewed our test from last week, discussed the pros and cons of open note tests, and decided to spend some of our time working on our stories and take a break from Social.
In math, we continued to work on our division skills. Trying some challenging long division questions.

We completed and took up some of the chart about animal adaptations. Students started a research report on Monday. It’s about a plant or animal and its adaptations. It is due next Wednesday, February 12th.
